With over twenty years of experience in health care service provision in Palestinian communities, UPMRC has developed numerous community contacts and networks throughout Palestine. While continuing to work within our mandate to provide health care services, UPMRC has increasingly focused in recent years on outreach activities as a method to improve the overall situation of those in need. We strongly believe that community participation and development from "the bottom-up" is one of the most effective methods for improving health status. We have utilized our extensive networks to conduct outreach and community activities. Outreach and community activities allow us to reach a wider audience and publicize our health messages to the general community. In addition, such activities serve to address the unmet needs of the general public and strengthen our ability to remain sensitive to the circumstances and concerns of our constituents.
We conduct variety of Community Outreach activities, including: support groups and group discussions, mobile clinics, health fairs, campaigns and home visits. We also are becoming involved in grass roots activities such as small communities projects and youth centers.
Small Community Projects:
UPMRC believes that the health of communities and individuals is strongly linked to overall community well being. Strengthening the capacity of communities and assisting them in development is a good way to improve the health status of the population. Believing strongly that the best development is that which is conducted from the "bottom up" (that is, according to the needs and priorities set by the communities themselves) and that with a small amount of assistance local organizations will gain the tools necessary to address their communities needs, UPMRC has initiated numerous community development projects in localities throughout Palestine. These community development projects cover a wide scope of subjects such as, training women and youth in leadership, computer and life skills, helping communities renovate kindergartens and community centers, improve libraries, purchase computers for schools, and conduct summer camps and community sports tournaments.
Youth Centers:
In line with it's philosophy of holistic health and community development, UPMRC established The Ramallah Youth Center in 2000 to provide young people with a space to grow and develop. The center was founded on three guiding concepts: democracy, training and empowerment. Furthermore, we recognize young people's potential to become agents of change in their communities, thus contributing to community led development and advancement.
