PMRS Receives Chronic Disease Medications from Germany

Ramallah, 05-02-08: The Palestinian Medical Relief Society’s Chronic Disease Program received welcome support from the German government today in the form of a shipment of chronic disease medications.  The medications were provided by the Humanitarian Assistance Section of the German Representative Office to the Palestinian Authority via Medico International, and will be distributed to people with chronic illnesses through PMRS’ Individual Relief Program.

The medications were presented to PMRS at a ceremony at its head offices in Ramallah, attended by Dr. Mustafa Barghouthi, President of PMRS, Mr. Joerg Ranau, German Representative to the Palestinian Authority, Ms. Ann Wagner, the mission’s Director of Humanitarian Assistance, Mr. Tsafrir Cohen, Representative of Medico International, Dr. Mohamed Iskafi, Director of PMRS’ Emergency Response Program, Ghadir Totange, Director of PMRS’ Pharmacy Program, and Mr. Sameh Jarallah, Director of PMRS’ External Relations Department.

Dr. Barghouthi thanked the German government for its ongoing support to the Palestinian people, and said that the aid was critical in giving people with chronic diseases access to essential medications in the current context whereby massive levels of poverty mean that people are often unable to afford the high cost of such medicines.

Mr. Ranau explained that this assistance comes in light of the difficult humanitarian conditions in Palestine, particularly in the Gaza Strip, which remains under siege.  He said that he hoped a quick solution to the crisis could be found, and praised the role played by PMRS in providing treatment and medications to the Palestinian people.

For his part, Mr. Cohen said that Medico International had facilitated this support to PMRS in view of its excellent work in bringing primary healthcare to the Palestinian people in spite of the obstacles posed by the ongoing occupation.
