The Palestinian Medical Relief Society and the Star Hope Center ended a training session for the empowerment of disabled women in the Tulkarem area.


Tulkarem, 13-05-2009: The Palestinian Medical Relief Society and The Star Hope Center ended a training session for disabled women in the Tulkarem area, called "Empowering women with disabilities and raising awareness on the knowledge of their rights". The training was conducted in cooperation with the local committee and the women center in the Tulkarem refugee camp.

Twenty-five disabled girls participated in the training that lasted for a period of four days during which lectures were provided by a number of specialists.

Samir Abu-Shams from the Independent Commission for Human Rights provided for a lecture during the training sessions on the rights of the disabled and the need for the adoption of the Disability Act, but also on enabling the disabled to participate in daily life.  

Latef Chalabi from the PMRS Rehabilitation Program and Shafa' Al Hatab from the women's center provided two lectures. Chalabi discussed the rights of the child and the right of disabled women and Al Hatab spoke about communication and psychological counseling.  

Nehriz Ofa, the coordinator of the Rehabilitation Program of Medical Relief in Tulkarem gave a lecture on the program activities conducted in Tulkarem and on the program's achievements, such as the integration of disabled persons in the community and the provision of services to these people.

Rudeina Abu Jarad of the PMRS Rehabilitation Program emphasized the necessity to take care of women with disabilities and to ensure their participation in activities to raise their skills.

Abu Jared expressed words of thanks to the participants and to the Stars Hope Center, which sponsored the session.

During the training, the participants were provided with recreational activities. Additionally, the program staff planned a trip to Albathan near Nablus in the near future for the participants and their parents.

The Star Hope Center emphasized the importance of the empowerment of women and the networking and communication with civil- and community institutions, as well as the need to ensure the repetition of similar training sessions.
